Boreholes

 

The Boreholes extension allows you to predict the performance of large fields of interacting boreholes in a single simulation. The model handles both straight and slanted holes in homogeneous ground.

Each individual hole (single or double U-pipe) is modelled using 2D cylindrical coordinates. By using superposition and mirroring techniques, the full 3D temperature field - with the correct thermal response in all timescales - can be computed and visualized in 3D.

By simultaneous (fully coupled) simulation the borehole field, plant as well as the building , it is possible to take realistic account of heat pump capacity and COP dependence on borehole return temperature. Control strategies can also be applied to keep the ground temperature at an optimal level for both heating and cooling. These critical effects cannot be studied by the commonly used approach of first calculating the load from the building and then applying it to a separate borehole model.

A simplified version of the borehole model, limited to a single hole, is distributed with the IDA ICE Standard edition.

Ice Rinks and Pools

 

The Ice Rinks and Pools extension allows you to have open ice and water surfaces in a zone.

 

The models account for both mass and heat transfer between the surface and the zone. Needed cooling and heating of the water in order to reach and maintain desired setpoint temperatures are modeled. For ice formation, the phase-change process is treated and the continuous refreshment of pool water is also accounted for. For ice rinks, two pipe layers are modeled, one for freezing the ice and another below the ice layer to heat the ground in order to prevent frost propagation.

ASHRAE 90.1 

 

The ASHRAE 90.1 extension helps to perform the Building Performance Rating Method in Appendix G of ASHRAE 90.1-2007, which is used in Green Building Programs like LEED and BREEAM.

A template simplifies the creation of the Proposed Building model and the extension automatically converts it to a Baseline Building, according to Appendix G. The conversion includes database support for envelope properties and space types as well as automatic HVAC-system selection and rescaling of windows and sky-lights. Design runs to decide equipment capacities and annual simulations for four directions are done automatically. Reports are designed to fit with LEED submittal forms and other resource documents on LEED Online. Currently System 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8 are supported.

Slab Cooling and Heating

 

The Slab Cooling and Heating extension allows you to handle embedded heating and cooling systems (TABS) – both water based and electrical.

Separated water based cooling panels and radiators are available in the Standard edition, while the Slab Cooling and Heating extension adds the possibility for combined heating and cooling panels.
